45 days back I gave a presentation on Sex selection in Developmental Biology class and students raised a lot of questions on why sex selection is widely followed in India.
Basically Sex selection is that parents select the sex of their offspring(child) before the mother gives birth to the child. I am writing this topic because many are unaware of what actually going on in the society and why the gilrs ratio is declining...I have been hearing from past 2 years saying that guys are not able to find girls to get married. The ratio of this is all because of the sex selection being practiced from many years. Even though the court had passed rules and restriction to this still in many countries its being followed( Especially in India, Pakistan, Australia). The society in India is the worst one that even the educated parents still practice this. They want there off spring to be male thinking that boys can carry there family name to next generation. I still cannot understand why many couple think in this way. Guys change your way of thinking and if this sex selection is practiced in this way there will be no girls on this earth...
This is one side of sex selection and now i am going to tell the other side of the sex selection. Sex selection is also practiced to prevent sex-linked disorders. There are a lot of genetic diseases like sickle cell anemia, hemophilia A etc which effect the embryo and the child may be born with defects. The couple can go for the medical methods(Sperm sorting, Amniocentessis, Ultrasonography) available and can go for dignosis where u can identify the defects of the embryo. This helps the parents to have a healthy child. This is the condition where sex selection is very useful. Always there will be both pros and cons for any application of science. But it depends on the way mankind uses it. So my sincere advice to everyone is use the sex selection for medical reasons.
